GT Ultra

GT Ultra dances between the worlds of sans and serifs, fusing calligraphy and construction. Achieving a balance between flair and function across a versatile typographic system, the design combines the centuries-old context of serif type with the dynamism of modern sans; challenging its own definition and questioning contemporary typographic expectation.

The world is rife with anonymous sans typefaces, carrying with them the misguided notion that they are contemporary by default. They’re slick, they’re modern, they’re now. Likewise, serifs are often seen as inescapably historical, old-fashioned, and out-of-date.

Well, GT Ultra is here to prove both of those assumptions wrong. It’s time for something else; something that objects to what’s expected of contemporary typefaces. Something that is neither here nor there.

With energetic architecture and finespun details laying its bedrock, this versatile, variable typographic system utilizes the latest typographic technology to realize its full potential, while showcasing its contrary combination of contexts; informed by the past, affected in the present and crafted for the future.

Welcome to that something

Our process, much like the alphabet, begins with the letter a. This single letterform kick-started the journey of GT Ultra’s construction, acting as the genesis behind designer Noël Leu’s initial sketch of an elegant, traditional, and classically constructed serif. The design then went through a pragmatization of sorts; decluttering the typeface of its decoration and construction.

Calligraphy

Handcrafted

Typeface

Noël slowly began to develop the proportions of a sans and provide a more geometric construction to the budding typeface. He did this by removing the serifs and ornamental ball terminals, reducing the optical contrast to a single line width, and compressing the horizontal rhythm.

Introducing a weight axis laid the groundwork for a fully-functioning Standard subfamily, resulting in a sturdier and more obviously constructed skeleton of the typeface. This, however, was only the beginning of GT Ultra’s development.

Juggling the task of creating a typeface that is both construced and hand-crafted, Noël worked to give the existing geometric framework warmth while avoiding the more varied horizontal proportions associated with calligraphy. Noël methodically repeated geometric forms across the typeface, leading to a distinctly constructed feel and character.

Distinct individual cuts within the Standard, Median, and Fine subfamilies make the breadth of the typeface’s potential indisputable. Any size, any space, and any weight, GT Ultra is made for it. From bubbly, brash, and bold to its sharpest and most sophisticated style.

A bit of then and a bit of now, GT Ultra takes what we know and throws a spanner in the works. It’s fierce, friendly, and formidable, disrupting our expectations, and having a total blast while doing it.
